My name is Laura Richardson Bassett and I am running for the office of Oceanside City Clerk.
Oceanside has been my home for 53 years. I was born at Tri-City Hospital and raised in Oceanside where I graduated from El Camino High School in 1985. I went on to get my Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the University of Southern California in 1989.
After college, I came back to the city I love to settle down and raise my family. My husband Taylor and I raised our six children here in Oceanside. Our youngest will graduate from high school this year. The others are in college or are working in their chosen careers.
I have been an independent Real Estate Broker for the past 13 years and have been a licensed professional fiduciary, administering trusts and estates for the past 9 years. This particular career has required my prudent care of other people’s assets, a requirement for a City Clerk.
My mom instilled a sense of civic duty in me from a very young age. She even gives all her grandchildren an application for voter registration on their 18th birthday. Along with being very involved with community events during my school-aged years, I have also worked as a volunteer on local events with the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce such as Harbor Days and Operation Appreciation which honors our military personnel. I have also been very involved with the local theater community with my entire family since 2006, and have worked as a volunteer at the historic Star Theatre in downtown Oceanside.
My professional experience along with my volunteer time has given me the opportunity to work with many individuals and groups to help make our city and county a better place and I wish to continue these efforts. Oceanside is a city on the move, with many exciting improvements in place or in the planning stage. With our beaches, the harbor, the Mission, parks and recreational activities throughout the City, the Oceanside Museum of Art and so many more positive things, who would want to live anywhere else?
The City Clerk is a many faceted job. The Clerk is responsible for local elections, makes certain the City contracts comply with all state and federal laws, and is the City’s Historian. In addition to keeping records of all City meetings, including the City Council meetings, the Clerk archives all historical records of past actions. As City Clerk, I would attend all City Council meetings and assist the Council in the orderly conduct of meetings. The City Clerk functions as a department head and is responsible for the work and training of what is currently a very competent staff.
I am running for this position to continue to give back to our community and be part of keeping Oceanside unique and excellent. My extended family has been teaching, building and serving in elected positions in Oceanside for the past three generations. My intent is to continue that tradition.
I believe the integrity of this office is important and look forward to continuing the high standards the office has always maintained.
I hope you will join me in making Oceanside a beneficial place for all and a place where integrity and uniqueness are always associated.
